The Grains Industry

The Australian grains industry is spread across the inland, eastern, south-eastern and south-western parts of the continent. The three major grain growing regions are divided into 14 GRDC Agro-Ecological Zones as shown below.
The principal winter crops are wheat, barley, oats, canola and lupins. The main summer crop is grain sorghum.
Grains are often grown in conjunction with livestock.

Wheat
- Coarse Grains: barley, oats, sorghum, maize, triticale, millets/panicums, cereal rye, canary seed
- Pulses: lupins, field peas, chickpeas, faba beans, vetch, peanuts, mung beans, navy beans, pigeon peas, cowpeas, lentils
- Oilseeds: canola, sunflower, soybean, safflower, linseed
- * Cotton and rice are not regarded as part of the grains industry.
