Water balance | |||
The impact of the industry on the water cycle – includes impacts on water balance (water quantity) and water quality.

Some aspects of this component such as water bodies contained within industry land could be regarded as ‘bio-physical assets held by the industry’. In many situations, however, there is a substantial exchange between industry lands and more extensive water systems. This is most extreme for irrigated industries using water from a distant source. It was decided to cover all water components together in the Signposts framework rather than split them into the condition of water assets held by the industry and the impact of the industry on water assets held by others.
Desired outcome
Reduce or eliminate negative contributions and maintain or increase positive contributions.
Indicator
A composite of the results for each sub-component.
Summary measure
To be developed
- more
One possibility is a multivariate summary measure in which individual summary measures from the sub-components are displayed as kite diagram (figure 1).
