Capacity of land to provide other ecosystem services
| Parent component | |||||
| Current component | |||||
| Sub components | |||||
Carbon sequestration | Cultural (non-material) services | ||||
The capacity of the land held by the industry to provide other ecosystem services in addition to the production of food and fibre.
- more
‘Other’ ecosystem services include biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration and cultural or non-material services. Additional components can be added as necessary.
Desired outcome
Maintain or enhance capacity to provide other ecosystem services in addition to the production of food and fibre.
- more
Assuming the capacity to produce food and fibre is unchanged, an increase in the capacity to provide other ecosystem services increases the value of the industry’s bio-physical assets and hence Australia’s natural capital. Conversely, a decrease in the capacity to provide other ecosystem services decreases the value of Australia’s natural capital.
Indicator
A composite of the results for each sub-component.
Summary measure
To be developed.
- more
One possibility is a multivariate summary measure in which individual summary measures from the sub-components are displayed as kite diagram as shown in Figure 1.

Results
Summary measures are available for some sub-components. Refer to the component tree.

Responses
- more
See individual sub-components.
Interactions with other components
- more
Changes in the capacity to provide other ecosystem services may affect the capacity to produce food and fibre.
External drivers
- more
Increasing recognition of the importance of various ecosystem services and society’s demand for them. See individual sub-components.
